DUFFELS! November 1, 1768 at the Colden Store, Coldengham, New York

Tuesday, November 1, 1768
Coldengham, New York
Store of Cadwallader Colden, Jr.

Duffels

The first day of November (and the next to last day recorded in the Day Book) was a busy day at the Colden Store. Twenty-five persons made 120 transactions. The high activity did not appear to be the result of any news of an impending store closure. No items were on sale and no transactions were extraordinary.

Benjamin Terwilliger Jr. purchased three-and-one-half yards of Duffels on this day, 250 years-ago. Duffels or Duffields was a coarse woolen cloth with a thick nap.

Webster defined Duffel in his 1828 dictionary as 'A kind of coarse woolen cloth, having a thick nap or frieze.' Duffel coat and duffel bag obtained their names from the fabric from which they were originally made, which in turn got its name from the province in Belgium in which the material originated.
